For some daring individuals, vacation isn't meant for sightseeing and poolside or beachside relaxation. It's an opportunity to break from the monotony of everyday life and pursue something truly adventurous -- something that'll test their mettle, boost their adrenaline and provide vivid life-long lasting memories. The world is a vast, amazing place, and it offers an abundance of destinations for extreme sports junkies eager for invigorating experiences. The following are among the best-known and most marveled.
- Jaws (Peahi), Hawaii (big wave surfing, tow-in surfing): The world's best surfers flock to Hawaii to conquer the world's most challenging waves. On the north shore of Maui, monstrous right- and left-directional waves prompted locals to call it Peahi, the Hawaiian name for surf break. In most cases, however, it's referred to as Jaws, a reference to the classic film. This is where Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama invented tow-in surfing, in which a jet ski, using a rope, tows a surfer into an impossible-to-enter wave. Peahi isn't just for anyone -- you need an invitation from a fellow surfing vet to participate in the action.
- Gran Canaria, Canary Islands (windsurfing): With an average yearly temperature just under 75 degrees, an average yearly precipitation total of just more than five inches and consistently forceful winds, Gran Canaria boasts the perfect conditions for windsurfing. Just ask Bjorn Dunkerberck, windsurfing champion, who resides on the island most of the year. Even if you're a beginner, there are wonderful beaches on which to develop your skills, such as Playa del Ingles, San Agustin and Tarajalillo, to name a few.
- Dahab, Egypt (freediving): Identified as the freediving Mecca, Dahab features comfortably warm and clear, highly visible water well-beneath the surface, where marine life -- such as rays, moray eels, crocodile fish and groupers -- and eye-catching coral are easy to spot. The premiere diving location is just 50 feet from the shore and contains a depth of 295 feet, convenient for the pros who can't wait to partake in the fun. Other diving spots that visitors frequent include the Lighthouse Diving area (depth of more than 130 feet), The Canyon (depth of about 100 feet) and The Islands.
- Magpie River, Canada (whitewater rafting): A true outdoorsman or woman will appreciate the days-long experience of traveling down the majestic Magpie River in Quebec. Whitewater rafters in particular enjoy the exciting class three to five rapids amid the calming plush, green boreal forests. The diverse Canadian wilderness consists of impressive cliffs and rolling hills, where bears, moose, lynx and wolves enjoy a comfortable existence. Perfect for camping, the area is also home to Riviere-Au-Tonnerre, a quaint village with all the modern conveniences.
- Wales, United Kingdom (coasteering): Coasteering, the traversing of a rocky coastline by foot and by swimming, recently emerged as a recreational activity along the coastline of Wales, where ambitious folks from all over the world gather during all seasons. Although it doesn't involve the same element of fear as some other extreme sports, it does include a fair amount of risk, as participants are often required to navigate through areas in which large waves, large rocks, gullies and caves are all present. Drowning and hypothermia are possible outcomes for those who are unprepared, but those who play by the rules can make an accomplishment of a lifetime.
- Angel Falls, Venezuela (BASE jumping): Many BASE jumpers prefer to jump from enormous towers amid impressive world-class skylines, but they're missing out on some of the natural scenery that comes with jumping from, say, the tallest waterfall in the world. Standing at 3,212 feet with a plunge of 2,648 feet, the picturesque Angel Falls descend from Auyantepui, Venezuela's most famous tabletop mountain. Considered the largest drop in the world, it's a go-to spot for expert jumpers who appreciate spectacular views and an awesome challenge.
- Pokhara, Nepal (paragliding): Nepal is home to part of the Himalayas -- namely Mount Everest, which stands on the Nepal-China border -- and its hundreds of towering peaks that are best seen from above. Paragliders love the country because of the breathtaking views provided at several paragliding sites. Surrounding the Phew Tal Lake, for example, is a 2,300-foot peak that overlooks Pokhara, a city of 2.5 million people. The Dickie Danda and Green Wall site features miles upon miles of jungle, waterfalls and wildlife, all of which you can nearly touch from the air. Exhilarating experiences are certainly aplenty.
- Nameless Tower, Pakistan (rock climbing): The world's highest peaks reside in Pakistan, the point at which the Himalaya, Hindukush and Karakoram Mountains converge. In the Trango Towers stands Nameless Tower, also known as Trango Tower, which is 20,469 feet above sea level. Avid climbers are encouraged to test the peak -- free of charge -- at their own risk, and there have been numerous takers through the years. Quite simply, there isn't a more difficult and rewarding area to climb in the world.
- Valdez, Alaska (ice climbing): Thanks to the late pioneering outdoorsman Dr. Andy Embick, Keystone Canyon in Valdez is now a haven for the ice climbing community. With the routes he established almost three decades ago, climbers can undertake a variety of challenges during their stay in The Last Frontier. Averaging 326 inches of snowfall per year, there's no shortage of frozen waterfalls and icy peaks to cover. Valdez is also a prime destination for snowboarders and heli-skiers.
- The Cariboos, Canada (heli-skiing): For the ultimate terrain -- including steep descents -- the most skilled skiers visit The Cariboos with the assistance of a helicopter. These peaks are unreachable under normal circumstances and are covered with enough fresh, untouched snow to go around. The Cariboo Chilcotin Coast is served by CMH Heli-Skiing and TLH Heliskiing, either of which is capable of fulfilling your extreme skiing dreams.
