There may not be a more nerve-racking experience than a formal marriage proposal, so doing it in public before a captive audience takes guts. If it's accepted, it'll be one of the best moments of your life. If it's rejected, it'll be the most humiliating moment of your life and, well, that's what you get for putting your (former) significant other on the spot. But given the recent abundance of public wedding proposals, one has to wonder how many of them are authentic. Are there really that many schmucks who think it's a good idea to pop the question at a sporting event? Watch the 10 painfully awkward marriage proposals below and decide for yourself.
- Honey, Honey, Honey: The upside of this rejected marriage proposal is that Kathy likely had a spare ticket for a Wizards game, which could be used to entice a suitor with a better haircut. Of course, if you're a cynic and a basketball fan who regularly attends games, you probably realize there's a good chance that Kathy and her "boyfriend" worked for the Wizards' Game Operations department.
- Someone Dropped the Ball: As the lady dropped the basketball, her boyfriend dropped the ball on his proposal, eliciting a chorus of boos from the Spurs' home crowd in San Antonio. One sign that thing were going to end poorly -- or it was simply staged -- was the presence of the coyote, which some cultures consider to be a trickster.
- Rockets Game Rejection: Another NBA game, another proposal. Real or not, this one evoked a reaction from the crowd and then-Rockets star Tracy McGrady. Teams are known for finding creative ways to entertain their fans during breaks in the action, and the Rockets certainly came through on this one.
- Twins Fan Slapped Down: One thing to note when planning a public proposal: if your girlfriend isn't a fan of unneeded attention and being put on the spot, forcing her to make the biggest decision of her life before thousands of strangers may not be a good idea. In fact, it could result in a slap in the face, literally and figuratively. So regardless of whether or not this proposal is authentic, there's a lesson to be learned.
- Boo to Being a Blueshirt Bride: Poor Melissa was (supposedly) just trying to enjoy Valentine's Day and an exciting 2-2 hockey game involving her (supposed) favorite team before her (supposed) boyfriend Nick sprung a cheesy yet life-altering question. The rest of the night didn't go too bad, however, as the Rangers went on to score three consecutive goals, defeating the Lightning 5-2.
- Absentee Bride-To-Be (?): Rejection is the worst thing that could happen during a proposal, but it's certainly not the only thing that can go wrong. In this case, Brian was prepared to pop the question on stage to his girlfriend Jennifer, who was supposed to be at church that morning. Unbeknownst to Brian and Pastor Jeff Patton, who was attempting to facilitate the proposal, Jennifer was asleep at home. The result was a couple of uncomfortable minutes of fruitless waiting.
- Nervous Mike on the Mic: Mike's girlfriend was clearly out of his league, making this proposal less than believable. But he did a pretty good job of conveying his nervousness, so maybe there's a chance it's real? Either way, it was definitely painfully awkward for both the studio audience and viewers.
- Bad Actor: This proposal was also painfully awkward for all who watched it, but not because of the rejection -- the girlfriend's acting job that was cringe-worthy -- causing a mostly confused reaction from the audience. Well done, Australia.
- Shirtless Wonder: This is easily the most poorly planned -- if planned at all -- public proposal that has been recorded and offered up for public viewing. The guy was shirtless, not in very good shape, presumably drunk and/or high, and he decided to ask his girlfriend to marry him between songs at a Born Ruffians (here's your publicity, guys) show. Unfortunately, she was either not in the audience, too embarrassed to respond, or she didn't even exist.
- Radio Ruination: Nigel, a jokester Rock radio host from Austin, managed to ruin the life of one of his adoring fans by transforming an on-air proposal into a breakup. Hey, working in radio is a difficult job, so you have to keep your show edgy in order to keep your audience, even if it means sacrificing a loyal listener or two -- or faking it until you make it.
